Brasserie St Bernardus

If you’re yearning for Belgian beer in Tokyo, a good place to visit is Brasserie St. Bernardus in Kanda. It’s not the cheapest place around, but it does cost less than a round-trip ticket to Belgium.

Tokyo has a strong craft beer scene, and there’s no shortage of excellent Japanese craft beer to try. But there are times when nothing but Belgian beer will do. When that craving hits, Brasserie St. Bernardus is the place to visit.

St. Bernardus is part of the Belgian Delirium/Belg Aube group of bars, but in true Japanese fashion, has clearly been designed to suit more upscale consumer tastes in this part of Tokyo. There’s plenty of wood and an abundance of overtly-Belgian knickknacks on display. In short, it looks like a Japanese interpretation of a Belgian pub.

There are around 19 taps available here, ranging from IPA to stout. Almost all are by the St. Bernardus brewery, with an occasional tap from other Belgian breweries like Mikeller. A good one to try, if available, is a Belgian Chocolate Stout by Rio Brewing & Co.

With drafts going for around JPY700 to JPY950, and bottles for JPY1200 and above, it’s not the cheapest place in town. But there are some great Belgian beers here, and it sure beats flying all the way to Belgium and back.
