Yoyogi Koen Park

Yoyogi-koen Park is one of Tokyo’s largest parks. With its vast forested grounds and vibrant events space, it’s great for outdoor activities, people-watching, or just getting a dose of greenery.

Despite having fewer in the way of cherry trees than other spots in Tokyo, Yoyogi Park one of the metropolis’s most popular hanami spots - simply because it’s a relaxed and convivial gathering space. Thousands descend on its grounds in spring, making the park a non-stop cherry blossom party - at least for a few brief days.

At any time of the year, though, one of the best reasons to visit Yoyogi-koen Park is simply to observe Tokyo’s inhabitants. The weekends in particular are rich with life and activity. You might see groups of young break-dancers practicing under the bridge near the main thoroughfare, or street performers and circus practitioners near the central fountain.

On the NHK side of Yoyogi Park is the events square, which plays host to what seems like a different festival, food fair, or flea market every other weekend. Think Brazilian cultural festivals, Indian food stalls, Tokyo Pride, antique markets, a St. Patrick’s Day parade. If you can think of it, it’s probably been done.
