Owned by Shuya Okino of Kyoto Jazz Massive, The Room in Shibuya is a small, hidden, indie club/bar playing great music across several different genres - as long as it adheres to their “jazz and soul music-centric policy.” Indeed, it has an almost craftsman-like ethos in the way it operates. All except one member of staff are themselves performing DJs or artists. And, just as comedians test out new jokes at smaller comedy clubs, top DJs have been known to play new sets at The Room to further refine their acts.

Those who are particular about their cocktails will also find much to enjoy here. While there is a drinks menu at The Room, customers can simply describe the kind of drink they’re in the mood for, and the bar staff will improvise with a bespoke cocktail. But if you’d rather have something off the menu, the ‘Kyoto’ is a popular choice.

Unsurprisingly, The Room attracts all kinds of quirky, highly individual characters from across the planet. But, with its kind and friendly staff, it manages to retain a delightfully unpretentious atmosphere. It’s a great place to rub shoulders with some cool, creative folk. You might end up with a few friends at the end of the night!
