This is one place where you’ll actually enjoy the ads. The Ad Museum Tokyo or ADMT in Shiodome takes you through a history of Japanese ads that’s as colorful as it is enlightening.

These days, advertisements are something many of us block from our internet browsers or actively click away from - no one loves being sold to! But as a subject of study, ads can be interesting as well as historically and culturally enlightening.

Located in the basement of the Caretta Shiodome Building, the Ad Museum Tokyo (ADMT) is dedicated to advertising and marketing in all forms. They collect and preserve advertising and marketing-related works, documents, and publications, all in the name of helping the public understand why advertising is important. And, appropriately enough, admission to the museum is free.

In the permanent exhibition, you’ll learn about the history of advertising from the Edo period all the up way to modern day Japan. Items on display include woodblock prints, summer fans, newspapers, and posters. Fans of graphic design will be particularly delighted with the 20th century advertisements section.
If you happen to be a media studies student or just have a passion for ads, the museum has a library that’s open to the public as well as researchers.
The only downside of visiting is having to find your way there. The maze of office buildings and underground passages in Shiodome is not fun to navigate at the best of times. But if you pair an exhibition at the ADMT with a lunch visit to Din Tai Fung on the same floor of the building, it’ll have been a few hours well spent.
