Nezu Museum

Tokyo has no shortage of great museums, but the Nezu Museum stands out even among them for the sheer breadth and depth of experiences to be had here.

Its privately-owned permanent art collection is extensive, ranging from calligraphy to ceramics to metalwork to textiles. Connoisseurs and art historians will appreciate the quality of the pieces on display. There are 6 exhibit halls in total; halls 3 and 4 are permanent exhibitions of Buddhist art, while the rest of the displays are changed regularly.

The buildings that house these artworks are also themselves architectural works of art. For instance, the Kengo Kuma-designed entrance to the museum never fails to impress. Like most museums in Tokyo, there’s an entrance fee (JPY1100 for adults), but in the Nezu Museum’s case it is worth every single penny.

Impressive art collection aside, Nezu Museum is worth visiting for a stroll through its 17,000-square meter Japanese landscape garden alone. Meticulously tended to, the garden is more like a carefully sculpted forest wonderland in miniature with its winding paths, stone lanterns, and artfully diverted streams.

Iris season during late May to June is an especially gorgeous time to visit. Fittingly enough, the museum collection also includes Irises, Ogata Kōrin’s iconic golden folding screens.

A great way to cap your visit to Nezu Museum is by having lunch or tea at the Nezu Cafe, which boasts fabulous views of the garden on three sides of the cafe.
