Narisawa

With two Michelin stars under its belt, Yoshihiro Narisawa’s eponymous restaurant in Aoyama is a favorite with gourmands all over the world. If you like several-hour intellectual exercises in gastronomy, this may be the right place for you.

Narisawa is beloved by gourmands in Japan and all over the world, and for good reason - the food is sublime. Chef Narisawa’s rigorous training in French cuisine is filtered through Japanese ideas and techniques, resulting in a style that’s completely his own.

Provenance and sustainability are key to Narisawa’s cuisine. Almost all the ingredients used here are sourced from producers in Japan. It goes without saying that the food is seasonal, and the menu changes frequently. Even the wine here is Japanese, and you’ll sample the best of it here.

As good as the food is, though, it’s not for everyone. First of all, you have to be willing to shell out at least JPY30,000, if not more, for dinner. (Lunch is relatively more affordable.) Dinner here can last 3 or 4 hours, with cerebral dishes that are often representing concepts beyond the food on the plate. It’s rather like a class in art appreciation, except you wind up eating all of the artwork. If this is your idea of fun, however, Narisawa should be on your culinary bucket list.
