Museum Of Yebisu Beer

For those who love their pints, an hour spent at the Museum of Yebisu Beer with a glass of beer is time well spent.

It’s often said that Tokyo is not just a city; it houses numerous cities within its urban sprawl. Built on the grounds of the former Yebisu beer factory, Yebisu Garden Palace with its cluster of restaurants, shops, and museums in Ebisu can feel like a small city in itself. So important was the beer factory that - rather unusually - it’s where the district of Ebisu derived its name from, rather than the reverse.

There’s no longer a functioning brewery in Ebisu. For that, you’ll have to venture further afield to Chiba, Shizuoka, or Hokkaido. But, you can visit the Museum of Yebisu Beer where the brewery used to be, and take a short tour of the museum.

In around 40 minutes, you’ll undergo a crash course in Yebisu beer history, learning about the origins of its name and how it was made, seeing Yebisu paraphernalia, and much more.

While the tour is usually conducted in Japanese, the highlight of the tour is really the opportunity for beer-tasting towards the end, which requires zero language skills to appreciate. The JPY500 entrance fee includes two glasses of beer, one light and one dark.

The tour culminates in a rock-scissors-paper tournament with the other members of the group. The winner walks away with another glass of beer, and the signature Yebisu glass it’s in. Great fun if you love your drink!
