Mori Art Museum

The Mori Art Museum in Roppongi Hills is hardly a secret spot - but it is one of the best contemporary art museums in Tokyo, and has one of the best views of the city to boot.

Tokyo has its fair share of world-class art museums, but only the Mori Art Museum has a claim to a spectacular view of Tokyo as well. It’s located on the 52nd and 53rd floors of the 54-storey Mori Tower in Roppongi Hills, and a ticket to the museum nets you access to the current exhibition as well as the Tokyo City View. It’s not the cheapest entry fee in town, but it’s a bargain for what you get.

The museum has no permanent collection of its own, and focuses mainly on modern and contemporary art from Asia, and occasionally the Middle East. Sometimes individual artists like Aida Makoto and Ai Weiwei have entire exhibitions dedicated to their work, though the museum also curates many group shows or thematic exhibitions. Past exhibitions have covered themes like architecture in Japan and Southeast Asian contemporary art.
Though contemporary art can be famously impenetrable, the Mori Art Museum aims to make its exhibitions reasonably accessible to the public. Exhibition information is usually bilingual in Japanese and English, and audio headsets in both languages tend to be available at each show. This is exactly the kind of museum you can bring your parents to. Probably.
As a bonus, the museum’s late opening hours means that you can squeeze in a visit after work to enjoy the night view.
