Miraikan

Miraikan or “The Future Center” in Odaiba is an excellent science museum dedicated to the best of Japanese technology and cutting-edge research. It’s a great place to bring kids - especially if they’re aspiring to become the next robotics genius.

Miraikan[Miraikan - image © Florentyna Leow] Odaiba is a large artificial island in Tokyo Bay built from reclaimed land. It seems fitting that it’s now home to the National Museum of Emerging Science & Innovation, or the Miraikan, as it’s more popularly known.

The Miraikan is dedicated primarily to Japanese technology and national research - its history, greatest hits, and hopes for the future. Think exhibits about space exploration, robots (like Honda’s ASIMO), neutrino observation instruments, environmental issues like climate change, and information technology.

It might sound like intimidating hard science, but the museum is in fact highly interactive, with plenty of buttons to push and switches to toggle. One of the highlights is definitely the Geo-Cosmos, a huge recreation of the Planet Earth showing you the latest cloud patterns using data collected from weather satellites.

Weekends often see educational workshops and fun activities targeted at children. Indeed, it’s a popular place to bring young children and immerse them in the world of science and technology. As a bonus, the museum is also bilingual in English and Japanese, so it’s a great place for families traveling with kids.
