Matsuya Ginza

Matsuya Ginza is one of several excellent department stores on Chuo-dori Street. Though it’s fantastic for women’s fashion, the food hall here is rather unremarkable.

Matsuya Ginza has been serving shoppers since 1925, and they’ve only gone from strength to strength. With 7 floors of fashion, household goods, and even a pet shop, the sheer size of the department store and the variety of its offerings is usually enough to keep any shopper occupied for hours.

Fans of Japanese fashion should visit the third floor of Matsuya Ginza, which is where famed designers Issey Miyake, Yohji Yamamoto and Comme des Garcons all have outlets. Their clothes and bags are beloved by Japanese and non-Japanese shoppers alike.

In the wider context of department food halls, Matsuya Ginza’s basement floors are surprisingly unremarkable - Mitsukoshi’s food hall is far more interesting. Still, they’re worth a quick look. Famed fruit purveyor Sembikiya also has an outlet here, and when summer hits, it’s a good place to gawk at the square watermelons on display.
