Restaurant turnover in a competitive city like Tokyo is scarily, mercilessly fast. What was here one week might be shuttered the next. When a restaurant here has been around for over 20 years, though, you know they’re doing something right.

A favorite with the expat community, La Bisboccia dishes up high-end Italian cuisine in a restaurant that’s a short walk away from Hiroo Station. There’s plenty of choices on the menu, but the quality of their offerings is uniformly good. Dinner will set you back around JPY8,000 to JPY10,000 per person, so it’s definitely a special occasion restaurant.

La Bisboccia does not skimp on ingredients or drama. Think, for instance, hot risotto tossed inside a wheel of Parmesan for extra cheesiness. The crowning glory here comes at the end of the meal: a dessert cart heaped high with all manner of confections like bronzed meringue-topped lemon cakes, a fruit pie, slabs of chocolate fudge cake…

It’s not trying to do anything new or innovative, so you won’t find La Bisboccia on over-hyped must-eat restaurant lists. Still, that shouldn’t stop you from eating here. At the very least, your tastebuds will have taken a trip to Italy and back.
