If you’re enthusiastic about cooking in any shape or form, you’ll want to head to Kappabashi Kitchen Street to stock up on kitchen tools and crockery. There is very little that you won’t find after some searching in the 150 shops lining this street. Tiny milk jug the size of your thumb? Check. Kakigori (shaved ice) machine for the summer? Check. A takoyaki pan for making your own grilled octopus balls? But of course.

This street is a good place to find ceramics and pottery. Products like bowls and chopsticks are priced quite competitively across shops in the area, so it’s a good idea to browse several shops before making your purchases. There are also a few shops specializing in knives - you may end up with a superb chef’s knife and a grindstone to go with it.

Kappabashi Kitchen Street is also famous for shops that sell plastic food samples, many of which are incredibly realistic. The large ones can be quite expensive; but the more affordable ones are sold as small keychains or magnets, making them great souvenirs for your friends back home. The replicas of tempura and sushi give ‘looks good enough to eat’ a whole new meaning!

If you’re planning on some major shopping here, make sure you bring enough cash. Credit cards are accepted at many stores, but some may be willing to give you a discount for more expensive purchases (like knives) if you pay in cash.
