Ippudo

Hakata-style tonkotsu ramen chain Ippudo might be familiar to well-travelled diners worldwide, but it’s still a solid choice when you’re looking for a quick meal in Ebisu - or any of their other locations in Tokyo.

Even though Ippudo has opened shops in many major cities worldwide - New York, Seoul, and Sydney, to name just a few - travelers to Japan still flock to their outlets when visiting. The cost-performance of a bowl of tonkotsu ramen here is still that much better than it is globally. Most importantly, it still tastes best in its home country.

One of the best parts about dining at Ippudo is customizing your ramen. Sure, there are already many choices to make at the outset - the white or red soup; garlic oil or none; intended toppings; noodle texture. But after it arrives at your table, you can doctor it even further with spicy beansprouts, salted pickled vegetables, pressed garlic, sesame seeds, and more. No two bowls will ever taste the same, which is half the fun when you’re eating at Ippudo. Having an English menu around also makes life that much easier when it comes to ordering lunch!

Almost as important as the ramen are the accompaniments. Those with the stomach space to spare should order mentaiko (seasoned pollock roe) rice alongside, or crispy, juicy, bite-sized pan-fried gyoza dumplings.

There are thousands of excellent ramen shops in Tokyo, and the globally-available Ippudo can seem tame by comparison. But if you’re just hankering for a bowl of Hakata-style ramen, Ippudo is the safe, reliable choice.
