A short walk from Shinjuku Station, the Hotel Gracery Shinjuku is a large, new, clean and well-run hotel in the heart of Kabukicho.

The Gracery Shinjuku is right in the heart of Kabukicho, which is officially Tokyo’s red-light district, but it’s not dangerous or even that scandalous (however, parents with young children might feel a little uncomfortable walking with kids to/from the hotel). On the plus side, the hotel is surrounded by good and cheap places to eat, and it’s only about 10 minutes’ walk to the station.

The hotel is in a high tower and it’s hard to miss because it’s got a huge statue of Godzilla’s head on an open patio outside the lobby (visible looming over the neighborhood from street level). It roars on a regular basis — enough to give the kids a thrill (don’t worry — he goes to sleep at night).

Rooms are small and efficient, with everything you need. There’s a restaurant on site and there are also coil laundry machines, which are convenient. The hotel is popular with East Asian visitors, which means that the lobby can get crowded with people and suitcases and noisy from cellphone conversations.

Room rates are squarely in the middle of the moderate category.

All told, it’s a good choice for those who want a convenient location in Shinjuku.
