Home Cafe

If you’re looking for the quintessential Akihabara maid cafe experience, look no further than @home cafe on the fifth floor of the Don Quijote building. But be warned - long queues await you.

Akihabara isn’t just about electronics anymore. Today, it’s also famous for its maid cafes - cafes that emphasize a particular style of interaction with waitresses in French-style maid costumes. As some of the maids speak English, @home cafe is one of the most foreigner-friendly places for a maid cafe experience.

Besides being served cute food and drink by these girls, you have the option of playing games and taking photos with them for additional fees. All the while, they’ll address you in respectful language - like the way a maid would address her superiors.

For a cafe that’s primarily about spending time with cute waitresses, the food is surprisingly decent. It would be nothing out of the ordinary save for the cutesy names - think items like Bitter and Sweet Parfait Chocolate Unrequited Love and Cutie Bunny Cheese Cake. That, and the extra ‘magic’ touches that the waitresses bring to it - you have to chant and perform a few ‘cute’ hand moves over the food along with them before you can eat.

The biggest downside to all this cuteness is having to wait for it. @home cafe is immensely popular. You might wait for hours in line, and you’ll have to pay around JPY700 per hour for the privilege of visiting in addition to ordering overpriced food. Is the experience worth it? You decide.
