Hibiya Koen Park

Hibiya-koen Park is compact but beautiful. Located a short walk north from Ginza, Yurakucho, and Tokyo stations, it’s a great place for a break or picnic lunch.

Hibiya-koen Park was Japan’s first public Western-style park, and remains a well-loved space by Tokyoites.

It’s compact but beautiful, and it’s a great place for a break or picnic lunch. You could grab some takeaway food at one of the department store food floors in Ginza and have a picnic.

There are many benches and places to sit throughout the park, and you’ll often see office workers on their lunch breaks here reading or - in some cases - practicing the trumpet. Hibiya Park is also a good place for nature-lovers in the middle of the city. You might see kingfishers if you’re lucky, and the park is home to the 500 year old ‘Risky Gingko’ tree.

Besides the green space, the park has numerous civic functions. There’s a library, a museum, a public hall, an open-air concert hall, tennis courts (extremely popular with the local office workers), and underground car parking. This is also a popular meeting spot for large organized protests, as they march to Kasumigaseki nearby.

During the summer months, the Hibiya Library is worth stopping by if you need a quick rest and a dose of air-conditioning. It occasionally hosts exhibitions - there was a recent one on Taisho period book and poster design - and they have free WiFi. There is also an ‘American shelf’ in one of the reading areas, which has a decent selection of books on history, business, and geopolitics.

It’s also worth walking past the Shisei Kaikan, a Gothic-style building opposite the library. This previously housed the Japan News Agency, and is one of the few Western-style buildings of this size remaining in Japan.
