Most well-travelled gourmands outside of Japan will have heard of wagyu, or Japanese beef. One of the best ways to eat wagyu is yakiniku, which will be better known to English speakers as Korean barbecue. In Shibuya, a 2-minute stroll from the station will lead you to Han no Daidokoro, a moderately posh yakiniku restaurant specializing in wagyu sourced exclusively from Yamagata.

Quality marbled beef isn’t just limited to Kobe breeds. Other regions of Japan produce wagyu that’s just as good, if not better in many cases. To qualify as proper Yamagata beef, the meat must derive from castrated males of the Kuroge Washu (Japanese Black) cattle breed - a stringent requirement, to be sure. But Han no Daidokoro’s insistence on quality Yamagata beef serves it well here. The rich, marbled meat - whether raw in sashimi form or grilled table side - is quite enough to send anyone into paroxysms of happiness.

A popular recommended dish is the highly Instagrammable wagyu beef sushi. This, as the name suggests, is nigiri-style sushi with a slice of flame-grilled beef atop. The restaurant surroundings are significantly more upscale than many yakiniku places in the area, so it’s a good choice for special occasion dining.

Han no Daidokoro is quite spacious - seating around 96 at capacity - so reservations are not strictly necessary. But, if you’re traveling in groups larger than 2 for dinner, you might want to make a reservation. It can get busy in the evenings.

There are a bewildering variety of beef parts on the menu, ranging from the robust kalbi (short ribs) to soft, luscious zabuton (literally ‘pillow’ cut). So, if you’re having trouble deciding or understanding the menu, servers are on hand to explain. Or you could remove all difficulties by ordering a set menu. Sit back and eat until the cows come home.
