Shinjuku has no shortage of great ramen, but Fuunji in the west side is the place to head to for excellent tsukemen dipping noodles.

With its density of excellent ramen shops in a small area, Shinjuku is a ramen lover’s paradise. While we’d be hard-pressed to provide an exhaustive list for the area, Fuunji is an institution in Shinjuku. It’s a place you shouldn’t miss if you love tsukemen - that’s noodles with a dipping broth served alongside. The shop itself is quite non-descript. But the queue outside belies its unassuming exterior. These noodles are well-loved, and for good reason.

Land and sea meet in Fuunji’s gorgeously creamy and smoky surf n’turf chicken and fish dipping broth. There’s ordinary ramen, but everyone comes for the tsukemen. You’ll know why when you taste it.

Diners have a choice of 200g, 300g or 400g of wavy, beautifully chewy noodles, enough to fuel you for a day of hardcore walking in Tokyo. You’ll want the special tsukemen, which gives you melting chunks of braised belly pork and a marinated egg to go with your noodles. At the end of the meal, you can dilute your dipping broth - which is quite concentrated - to a deliciously drinkable soup. Don’t forget to slurp your noodles as loudly as you can.
