Despite the fact that we live in the era of music streaming, vinyl records and CDs are enjoying an unprecedented renaissance. In Japan, the love for these tangible items never really disappeared, with CD sales still higher than most other countries. Unsurprisingly, this makes Japan a treasure trove for record hunters. A must-visit for the music geek is Disk Union in Shinjuku.

Disk Union is no mere record shop. The main Shinjuku shop has 8 floors, stocked from top-to-bottom with secondhand CDs and vinyl across a range of musical genres. From Japanese visual kei and indie rock to esoteric British reggae bands from the 70s, you’re likely to find a rare record on your wishlist, or at least discover your new favorite band here. Prices vary - and they’re often sold at market values - but dig deep enough and you’ll score a bargain or two.
