Yakko

Yakko in Shinsekai is another kushikatsu restaurant we like and recommend - the beef tallow they use to fry their skewers really gives the food a flavour boost!

[Yakko - image © Florentyna Leow] Shinsekai is the birthplace of kushikatsu, the quintessential working-class Osakan dish of deep-fried, battered skewers. The area is home to a number of fun kushikatsu restaurants, including several branches of Daruma, Tengu, and Yaekatsu. Another restaurant we like is Yakko. It’s pretty cheap and cheerful, with skewers going for around JPY120 to JPY280 each.

Like most of the other restaurants in the area, it’s a counter seat-only establishment. What sets it apart from the rest is that it’s partially fried in tallow, or beef fat, the way McDonald’s fries used to be cooked - this makes them extra crispy and gives them an additional depth flavour. We especially like the garlic, gizzard, and kisu (Japanese whiting fish) skewers, but most things on the menu are fresh and delicious.

The only real trouble with kushikatsu restaurants like this is knowing when to stop. It’s all too easy to get carried away when the food is this cheap and delicious! Since you’re on holiday, it probably doesn’t matter.
