Soba Takama

Located a 5-minute walk away from Tenjinbashisuji Rokuchome Station, 1-star Soba Takama serves glorious soba noodles at highly affordable prices. It might be one of the most affordable Michelin starred meals in the city!

Mention ‘Michelin star’ and most people will assume that eating at a restaurant with one will leave you a hundred dollars or several poorer than when you went in. But most people don’t reckon on a restaurant like Takama. The lunch-only Takama serves hearty but exquisitely-made soba noodles that’ll ruin you for most other buckwheat noodles, and a meal there will only set you back around JPY2,500 at most.

You have two choices of soba noodles here: the regular ‘mori’ soba made from marunuki (hulled, natural buckwheat) or ‘inaka’ soba made from hikigurumi (whole buckwheat flour). The latter has a more robust profile than the former and makes for a more rustic slurp - unsurprisingly, since ‘inaka’ translates to ‘countryside.’

Noodles aside, there’s plenty of side dishes to keep you occupied. Their dashimaki (Japanese-style rolled omelette with dashi) is a stellar example of the genre, while dishes like miso-pickled tofu and yaki-miso with buckwheat seeds and grated leeks are the kind of umami-packed flavour bombs that beg for a flagon of beer alongside to wash it all down. Go with friends if you can and share a number of side dishes.

Reservations aren’t essential at Takama, but if you do decide to just turn up on the day, expect a queue, since it’s popular enough that customers turn up 30 minutes before opening time to snag seats here.
