Shogin An

Do you love soba but also enjoy having a variety of side dishes to go with it? Then get thee to Shogin-an, a quiet little izakaya near Shin-Osaka serving both soba and fabulous gastropub-style dishes. Don’t forget to wash it all down with a bottle of sake or two.

Buckwheat noodles are one of the culinary high points of Japanese cuisine, but soba on its own can be a little lacking as a full meal - you do tend to get hungry quite quickly after a meal of just noodles. Thank goodness, then, for a restaurant like Shogin-an. They serve soba, but also offer a variety of delicious, rustic izakaya-style side dishes that pair beautifully with both noodles and all the sake on offer.

Some of the recommended dishes here include beef tongue, assorted sashimi, and Japanese-style omelette. There’s also more unusual dishes like deep-fried aubergine and eel in broth and shiokara (seafood marinated in its own guts - best enjoyed with alcohol). The vinegared mackerel is a good version of its kind - fresh and not too vinegary, gorgeous when lightly blowtorched.

Shogin-an does close once they run out of soba, so it’s best to go a little earlier if possible. It’s located southeast of Higashimikuni Station on the Midosuji subway line, one stop north of Shin-Osaka Station. Look for the white curtain in the doorway with blue writing.
