A common complaint from non-Japanese residents is the dearth of vegetables when dining out. It’s true that it’s harder to find fresh vegetables at izakaya and other restaurants, which is why places like Okonomiyaki Kyochabana are such a welcome breath of fresh air.

Kyochabana is a Kyoto-style restaurant serving okonomiyaki (a Japanese pancake with various fillings and toppings), teppanyaki (various hot plate-grilled foods), yakisoba (stir-fried noodles) and a variety of creative vegetable-based dishes. Think fresh heirloom veggies with miso sauce, and buckwheat noodles enlivened with colorful vegetables and wasabi.

Okonomiyaki can be a pretty heavy meal. But unlike most Osaka-style pancakes which tend to use more wheat flour and egg, the okonomiyaki at Kyochabana is heavier on the vegetables, with tofu and yamaimo (grated yam) binding the batter together. It’s a healthy alternative that’s lighter on the calories but big on flavor. They’re famous in particular for their tomato okonomiyaki.

English speakers won’t have a hard time here either as there’s an English language menu. They even have a few gluten-free options. A very decent place for dining in the station, especially if you’re looking for a healthier meal.
