Jibundoki

For brilliant and creative okonomiyaki, as well as some other dishes cooked on a teppan (iron griddle), try this excellent restaurant a short walk southwest of Honmachi Station. The name is written in English on the awning, so finding it shouldn’t be a problem.

Jibundoki in Honmachi isn’t your average teppanyaki restaurants. It offers all the usual suspects that a restaurant of this genre would, such as okonomiyaki (as-you-like-it Osaka-style pancakes) or yakisoba (stir-fried noodles), alongside dishes to nibble at over alcohol. The attention to detail and quality of ingredients really takes things to the next level, though. For instance, they use a rich chicken and pork broth to make their okonomiyaki, and spread 5 different sauces on it at the finishing stage.

The menu is varied and creative, with more upscale and unusual offerings for a restaurant of this sort. Imagine sautéed mountain yam and avocado with karasumi (bottarga) sprinkled on top; roasted potato with butter and mentaiko; or rice cakes wrapped with grilled, cured ham.

Their kushiyaki offerings are particularly interesting. Where most kushiyaki restaurants simply offer straightforward skewers (like pork chunks, mushrooms, or vegetables) to be battered and deep-fried, Jibundoki goes the extra mile - deep-frying items like cured ham, cheese and walnut, thigh meat with anchovy sauce, or scallop and green peppers is a real step up from the usual restaurants!

Prices here are a little more expensive than average for a restaurant in this genre. Expect to pay around JPY8,000 per head at dinner, and if you can, ask your concierge to make a reservation.
