Honto Sushi Kaiba

Can you believe a hipster neighbourhood like Kita-Horie has great sushi? Honto Sushi Kaiba near Yotsubashi does, indeed, serve up some delicious sushi. But if you don’t like raw fish, don’t fret - there’s plenty of cooked items on the dinnertime menu for a tasty meal.

With scores of independent boutiques and hipster cafes, Kita-Horie is the kind of district which evokes yummy-mummy brunches rather than sushi lunches. But just a short walk from Yotsubashi Station is the main branch of Honto Sushi Kaiba, a warm and inviting sushi restaurant that’s great for an inexpensive lunch or a more stylish dinner with friends or a special date. It’s definitely absorbed a little of the vibes of its Kita-Horie surroundings: the decor is like traditional Japanese restaurant meets chic cafe.

Pop in at lunchtime for their chirashi sushi bowls - either pay JPY900 or so for the basic bowl (already tasty) or shell out JPY2000 for a deluxe version. JPY1500 will net you a sushi and mixed tempura set for that perfect balance of cool sushi and hot fried food. Essentially, if you’re willing to pay a little more, you get a rather generous portion and variety of food here!

If you’re going to have dinner at Honto Sushi Kaiba, try coming with friends - all the better to share and try a wider variety of food. You can order nigirizushi (sushi pieces with toppings) by the 5-piece, 10-piece, or 16-piece, but that’s just the beginning. Snack on funky, fermented side dishes along with your sake. Sample a variety of fresh sashimi. If someone with you prefers not to have raw fish, there’s plenty of cooked fish for them: think salt-grilled fish head, fried oysters, mixed tempura, steamed egg custard, and more. It’s not the cheapest dinner around, but it’s not terribly expensive either.
