Hakugintei

Hakugintei in Honmachi sees daily queues for its rich, spicy curry rice - it’s the kind of soul food that’s worth queuing for. As it’s a tiny counter seats-only place, this is best for solo diners or in twos. A must-eat for Japanese curry fans.

Hakugintei is one of the best spots in Osaka for those who love curry. The curry here is viscous and richly flavoured, beginning with the characteristic sweetness of Japanese-style curry, but slowly heating up to a spicy burn. At least, this is assuming that you have a low (Japanese) spice tolerance.

Unlike most curry restaurants in Japan, you don’t have the option of specifying your desired spiciness here. Sometimes, though, it’s nice not to be beleaguered by choice paralysis and to just eat what you’re served!

Meals here are pretty affordable, averaging around JPY800 to JPY1400. Just rice and sauce alone can be satisfying enough - it’s super flavourful - but we recommend adding any and all of the following toppings to make a deluxe curry rice plate to make your Southern mamas proud: a raw egg, cheese, spinach, a deep-fried battered pork cutlet (tonkatsu), or fried shrimp. We especially like the tonkatsu. Just point at the English menu to order.

Hakugintei is a lunch-only place, and they do close when they sell out. So if you’re dead set on having a taste of their curry, show up early and make sure you’re in the line! They will occasionally open a little later than the stipulated time, but that’s just the reality of small businesses. It’s a tiny counter seats-only place, so don’t come in large groups, or be prepared to eat at different times!
