Binbiya

Binbiya is a high-end, 1 Michelin-starred izakaya in the Kita-Shinchi district specialising in fresh seafood dishes, but at surprisingly affordable prices. Dinner here is unlikely to run over JPY7,000 before drinks. Now that’s value for money!

The Kita-Shinchi district has no shortage of refined dining options. Even among the hundreds to choose from, Binbiya is worthy of your attention. ‘Binbiya’ isn’t a play on ‘a can of beer,’ but literally means ‘fish restaurant’ - ‘binbi’ means ‘fish’ in the owner’s local dialect. Luckily, you can actually have beer here, but you might want to skip this in favour of the excellent sake selection.

What’s on the menu here? It’s highly seasonal, but you’re guaranteed a parade of small, exquisite dishes. Think fresh, carefully-prepared sashimi of all kinds, from Ehime shima-aji (striped horse mackerel) to the finest uni sourced from Hokkaido. Deep-fried and marinated water aubergines, simmered tofu and mustard greens, rockfish broth, simmered sea bream. The signature dish here is the plum-simmered sardines - an unusual dish that will blow your socks off. Don’t forget to leave some room for house-made noodles to finish.

For those who care, Binbiya was awarded a Michelin star in 2013. While we typically take Michelin stars with a pinch of salt, it does speak to a certain level of quality in the food. The only problem most diners have here is choosing which dish to order. Make it easier and eat your way through the menu with a friend or two. Ideally, you should make a reservation before you go.
