Udon Yamacho

Exploring the Ebisu or Daikanyama areas? Udon Yamacho is a great little udon restaurant to drop by for lunch. Noodle bowls are varied, delicious, and inexpensive, and you get to choose from thick or thin noodles. We recommend ordering from the Japanese menu.

Udon noodles aren’t always thick and chewy — they come in all sorts. At Udon Yamacho in Ebisu, you have your pick of thick or thin noodles. The ‘thick’ noodles aren’t quite the chewy Sanuki-style slurps from Kagawa, but the udon here is still a good introduction to wheat noodles in Japan.

Operated by a katsuobushi shop in Osaka’s Kuromon Market, the noodles at Udon Yamacho are served in a characteristically high-quality, great-tasting dashi broth. One would expect no less from a shop selling ingredients for dashi stock!

There’s plenty to whet your appetite on Udon Yamacho’s menu, from an egg-topped option to deep-fried tempura udon to duck and leek noodles. While they do have an English-language menu, options here are limited, as the daily specials are written in Japanese. We strongly recommend trying your luck and choosing a random dish on the menu; or, use Google Translate.
