Tokyo Midtown

Tokyo Midtown in Roppongi is like a city within a city. Once you’re here, you won’t need to leave for a while - you can shop, eat, enjoy art, and finish the night with cocktails at the sky-high lounge.

Does Roppongi need two multi-development shopping and entertainment complexes? Apparently Roppongi Hills alone won’t do, so Tokyo Midtown opened in 2007. Besides apartments and offices, there are the usual shops, restaurants, museums, green spaces, and a luxury hotel (the Ritz-Carlton, to be precise), all centered around the 248-meter tall Midtown Tower.

The shopping here is decidedly on the more luxury end of the spectrum. That being said, if you’re looking for some high quality Japanese crafts, the third floor of the Galleria building has some great shops to check out. Think handmade geta (traditional shoes), yukata and fans with contemporary zebra prints, and some incredible ceramics by working artists.

If you’re not here to shop, pay a visit to the green spaces at Tokyo Midtown instead. There are two of them here. One is Hinokicho Park, a Japanese-style garden; the other is the Midtown Garden, popular in early spring for its cherry blossom trees.

One of the better reasons to visit Tokyo Midtown is the Suntory Museum of Art. Opened by the Suntory family, the eponymous museum relocated from nearby Akasaka-Mitsuke to snazzy new premises here in 2007. It’s a great place to enjoy exhibitions focusing on traditional Japanese art.

21_21 Design Sight will also be of interest to architecture and design buffs. Designed by star architect Tadao Ando, the mostly-underground museum mainly showcases temporary design-related exhibitions.
