“Depachika,” which is the shortened Japanese word for “the basement of the department store,” is really a synonym for culinary paradise. If you can think of a food, you will most likely find it on this floor. A vast, dazzling range of foods and cuisines are represented in this food hall, including but not limited to Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and miscellaneous Western foods, not to mention imported ingredients, delicacies, and spirits of all kinds. Luckily, there are plenty of depachika in Tokyo, and a great starting point for the visitor is the basement floor at Takashimaya Times Square.

Looking for dessert? You’ll find an abundance of Western-style pastries and Japanese-style confectionery equally represented here. Salads, grilled meats, pickles, fruits from across the nation and the globe, cheeses, cured meats, teas, even freshly-harvested seaweed - ask, and ye shall receive. There’s a great supermarket here if you need to stock up on specialty condiments such as regional soy sauces and dried fish stock bases. You can also pick up novelty Kit Kats - think flavors like butter and blueberry - at the Kit Kat Chocolatery. Weekends are a particularly fantastic time to visit the Takashimaya depachika. It’s a more crowded time of the week, but this is also when food samples are more likely to be on offer to help boost sales.
