Mitsukoshi Nihonbashi Main Store

Mitsukoshi in Nihonbashi has come a long way since its humble beginnings as a kimono seller. This giant department store is highly worth visiting for the gorgeous architecture and interior decoration alone.

Mitsukoshi began life in 1673 as a kimono store called Echigoya.

It’s expanded since then into the behemoth of a department store that it is today, and while there may be other branches of Mitsukoshi around, their flagship store in Nihonbashi is still the most impressive one to visit.

Even if you don’t like shopping, it is a worthwhile visit for the architecture and interior decoration alone.

Wandering around the cosmetics section, you’ll see that the columns that stretch to the ceiling look like stylized white bird feathers, while the central main hall contains a huge, ornate, and highly colorful statue of the Goddess of Sincerity.

This huge department store houses all the usual luxury brands you’d expect, and more. Most of the shopping leans towards the high-end and caters to the more well-heeled among us.

Naturally, Japanese avant-garde fashion giants Issey Miyake and Comme de Garcon also have outposts here. Usefully, tax-free shopping and concierge services for non-Japanese speakers available.

A great time to visit is at 10:30am, when the doors to Mitsukoshi officially open. As is traditional with most department stores of this stature, the staff are waiting at the doors to greet you with deep bows when you enter.

Note that while the shopping stops at 7:30pm, the restaurants continue operating until 10pm.
