If you’ve always wanted to try Japanese-style curry, Joto Curry Akihabara is a great place to begin your journey into this culinary genre. It’s one of the Tokyo outposts for the beloved Osaka-based curry chain, and one taste is likely to convert you to Japanese curry for life.

What does it taste like? Imagine a rich, gently sweet, thick gravy that’s deeply-flavoured with spice. It’s not outright spicy, but a gentle heat does start to kick in after a few spoons. If you want it hotter, shake on some chili powder from the container on the table.

There are toppings like fried aubergine and prawns available. But the tonkatsu curry is our favourite. It’s topped with a deep-fried, battered pork cutlet that’s perfectly crunchy on the outside and juicy within. This isn’t diet food, but it’s so delicious you won’t care. We thoroughly recommend adding melted cheese on top too.

Though there are a few branches of Joto Curry in Tokyo, we like the Akihabara outpost because they’ll give you a free raw egg with your curry. It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but trust us — stirring a creamy yolk only makes the curry that much richer and more delicious. If the idea of raw egg doesn’t sit well with you, compromise with a soft-boiled egg. Paired with melted cheese, it’ll be a curry rice to remember.

Like most ramen restaurants, you’ll order from a vending machine at Joto Curry Akihabara. Slide some money in and press the buttons you need. The Akihabara branch sees plenty of tourists, so they have English options to help you out.
