Wander into the basement of Tokyo Station, and you’ll feel as though you’ve stumbled into a mall on speed. Welcome to First Avenue Tokyo Station, a commercial facility in the station with around 100 shops in total. It’s hugely popular with travelers as well as commuters who pass through the station every day, and is certainly a destination in its own right.

Spanning the basement floors to the second floor, it encompasses themed areas such as Character Street, Tokyo Ramen Street, and Nippon Gourmet Road. Indeed, most of the shops in First Avenue seem to be restaurants, with pretty much all styles of food from ramen and sushi to curry and steak represented here, not to mention regions of Japan.

Many of the most popular restaurants tend to be busy at peak hours, but it means that if one place looks too busy, just walk around until you find another restaurant to eat at. Visitors to First Avenue are certainly spoiled for choice when it comes to food.
