Book And Bed Tokyo Shinjuku

Book and Bed Tokyo Shinjuku is a hostel with a twist - you sleep in boxes between hundreds of books lining the shelves! A night’s stay here is a charming bookish experience for bibliophiles. Don’t expect it to be comfortable, though.

Book lovers will know the joy of being utterly consumed by a good read, staying up past midnight and falling asleep with one’s nose in a book. That’s the concept Book and Bed Tokyo had in mind when designing this hostel - to create a space where guests could experience falling asleep being surrounded by books.

Book and Bed Tokyo Shinjuku is conveniently located near Shinjuku Station. Its location on the 8th floor makes it a little tricky to find, but you’re rewarded with great views of the surrounding area through large glass windows.

Most hostels go with bunk beds or capsules, but here, you crawl into boxes between walls lined with books. We love the communal reading area, which is charmingly decorated, airy and filled with all kinds of interesting books. It’s not a bookstore, so these aren’t for sale - even more incentive to spend some time enjoying the space late into the night.

Book and Bed Tokyo is quite upfront about the fact that their aim isn’t to provide a comfortable sleep. True to what they advertise, the mattresses aren’t particularly comfortable. There are no fluffy pillows or warm blankets either - it’s a fairly spartan experience! It’s all about being among the books. Light sleepers may want to snag some earplugs from the front desk - not all readers are quiet sleepers!

Besides the bookish experience, the WiFi is reasonably fast (all the better to update your Instagram with) and their breakfast, which comes with coffee, is surprisingly decent for a hostel. Note that unlike many places in Japan, they don’t take cash payments. They only accept credit card or IC card payments.
