Long-time Tokyoites mourned when Hotel Okura closed its doors in 2016: its modernist fusion of Japanese and Western architectural styles was much loved by design fans worldwide. But like a phoenix rising from the ashes, this luxury accommodation reopened in September 2019, rebranding itself as the Okura Tokyo after three years of renovations and refurbishments.

Thankfully, the Okura Tokyo retains much of the original designs, as well as the artworks and handicraft adorning its interiors. The famous main lobby builds on the charm of its original form. You’ll still see the lacquered chairs and tables arranged in the shape of plum blossom petals, as well as the gorgeous pentagonal ‘Okura lanterns’ hanging from the ceilings. From a finely-woven Nishijin brocade to wall tapestry to leaf patterned lattice work on the paper windows, the artistic details are sheer visual pleasure.

The hotel is divided into two sections: the Okura Prestige Tower and the Okura Heritage Wing. The elegant, expansive rooms in the Heritage Wing were designed with a traditional Japanese guest house in mind, while those in the Prestige Tower have a slightly more contemporary feel, plus sweeping views of the metropolis below, with guest rooms beginning on the 28th floor. The service at the Okura Tokyo is top notch, and all the amenities are high-quality. We particularly love the kits from organic spa brand Bamford.

Facilities include a fitness center and various spas, but also fantastic (and expensive) restaurants from teppanyaki to Chinese and gorgeous tea ceremony rooms. There’s even the Okura Museum of Art with a private collection of over 2500 artworks.

As befits a luxury hotel like the Okura, a stay here is strictly for special occasions or those with deep pockets. A single night at a room in the Prestige Tower starts at JPY70,000 per night, skyrocketing to as much as JPY700,000 for the suites. The Heritage Wing guest rooms seem modestly priced in comparison at JPY100,000 a night. A fantastic place to stay if you can afford it.
