Takuya is a small, counter seat-only tonkatsu restaurant near Higashi Umeda located in a backstreet jumble of tiny bars and restaurants. Their deep-fried, breaded pork cutlets are a cut above the rest - so tender and juicy that you’ll wish you eat here every week.

At the back of Tsuyu Tenjinsha Shrine in Higashi Umeda is a jumble of tiny restaurants and bars crammed into a few dozen square meters. Most of them look like they’ve been there for decades and will only have a couple of years before succumbing to an inevitable fire. One of these restaurants is Takuya, a well-loved tonkatsu restaurant that’s recognised as one of the best in Osaka.
What makes Takuya’s tonkatsu different? For one, the cutlets here are cooked at low heat, which keeps them incredibly tender and juicy within. They also mix in squid ink when preparing the crumb coating, which is why it looks a much darker brown on the outside than other comparable cutlets - it sure isn’t burnt!
The pork itself is, of course, astoundingly delicious - a pure porcine flavour that signifies a good life for the animal. You can choose from various cuts, but we think the fattier cuts are worth the extra calories. Besides the pork cutlets, Takuya also serves other fried items such as croquettes; you’ll also find homemade pancetta here.
Takuya is a little more upscale than most tonkatsu restaurants and is correspondingly a little pricier. Expect to pay around JPY6,500 for dinner, and don’t forget that there’s a cover charge of around JPY600. Luckily, they take credit cards. It’s a popular place with only 10 seats, so it’s a good idea to make a reservation.
