Shimanouchi Ichiyo

On the far east side of Shinsaibashi, this wonderful kappo specialist serves out-of-this-world seafood. Shimanouchi Ichiyo is named for Japan’s Inland Sea as that’s where a lot of their ingredients come from. The fare is creative and beautiful to behold.

Osaka is known for its kappo-style restaurants, where everything is prepared fresh in front of you. It’s less structured and more informal than kaiseki restaurants, but with that characteristic emphasis on seasonal ingredients and great cooking technique.

A great place to try kappo-style cooking in the Shinsaibashi district is Shimanouchi Ichiyo, a small restaurant specialising in seafood mainly from the Inland Sea. Dishes vary by season, but think concoctions like fresh sea bream marinated in flavourful kelp, an incredible dish of steamed sea bream bones (really!), grilled eel, a simple simmered abalone and tofu skin. It’s deceptively simple-sounding but intensely flavourful. Everything here is designed to go well with drinks.

Reservations are essential if you want to eat here - don’t expect to be able to just walk in. Make them through your concierge. English isn’t really spoken here, so either bring a Japanese speaker or rely on translation apps and hand gestures. It’s a friendly place, though, so don’t worry too much. Go with an open mind, a generous budget and a good appetite.
