Ramen Uroko

Osaka has a lot of great ramen shops, but Ramen Uroko stands out even among stiff competition. Located one stop south of Shin-Osaka Station, this joint serves up a fabulously flavourful shio (salt) ramen that’s sure to satisfy.

The area around Shin-Osaka isn’t exactly the most interesting of places in town - there’s not much to actually see or do. Luckily, there’s plenty to eat here. If you’re in transit between cities, head over to Ramen Uroko near Nishinakajima-minamigata Station to slurp down some ramen before getting on the bullet train elsewhere - their ramen is worth traveling a little further for.

Ramen Uroko specialises in shio ramen with an Osakan twist. You begin with a clear, umami-ful chicken and fish broth, not unlike other salt tare-based ramen across the country. But the twist here is the layer of pork back fat on top and a scattering of skipjack bonito flakes. There’s depth of flavour and fat in this bowl - more unusual for salt ramen which tends to err on the less fatty side of the spectrum.

Worth trying as well is the tamari shoyu ramen. It might look oddly dark for broth, but it’s rich and complex. They suggest pouring in a little vinegar to enliven the soup. Whichever bowl you order, make sure you get the egg and 3 slices of thin chashu.
