Matsusakagyu Yakiniku M

This Dotombori/Hozenji yakiniku specialist serves Matsusaka beef, one of Japan’s most famous and prized brands of beef. This place is cramped and often crowded, but the grilled beef is tasty.

Kobe beef might be the brand of beef most famous outside of Japan. But within the country, there are a number of regions producing high-quality beef that’s equally sought-after by gourmands and just as if not more delicious.

Matsusaka beef, produced in Mie prefecture, is one of these brands. Their process of producing great beef is as fanatical as any of the rumors you’ve heard: they feed the cows beer to stimulate the appetite, and massage the cows with shochu (distilled liquor, similar to vodka) to promote healthy blood circulation in the cows. All of this gives the beef a beautifully rich flavor and gorgeous marbling of fat throughout.

Given the quality of the beef, it’s no surprise that Matsusakagyu Yakiniku M in Dotombori is as popular as it is. They use only Matsusaka beef, and no part of the cow is wasted. At the restaurant, you can eat your way across the cow, from short ribs to flank to intestines, and there’s even beef miso soup and beef ramen made with the bones.

Set meals here start at around JPY3,800. It’s not exactly a cheap and cheerful meal, but this is definitely one of those restaurants worth splurging on when you want a special highlight on your trip. It’s a must-try for beef lovers.
